Hammock Clew Detail

The hammock clew is made as a shouldered sword mat (#2960 & #2963 "Ashley's Book of Knots"). Begin with six 1 1/2 fathoms of 5/16" cord, bend in the middle over a brass or iron ring (Fig. A). The ring should be ringbolt hitched to prevent chaffing the cords. An alternative method is to serve and bend the six cords forming an eye (Fig. B). A lanyard may be attached, however, it is optional, as hammocks should be made fast to hooks in the ship's beams.
